Sterling Silver Earrings for Women
If Your Ears Hurt, Read This First
Most "silver allergy" isn't an allergy to silver at all. It's a reaction to nickel, which is present in most plated base-metal earrings. The plating wears through within weeks, nickel touches your skin, and your lobes swell.
Genuine 925 sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper — no nickel by definition. That's why every piece in this collection is safe for the large majority of people with sensitive ears.
Two honest caveats. Very cheap earrings sold as "silver" are sometimes plated brass, and the plating hides nickel underneath — this is why stamped 925 matters. And if you react even to real sterling silver, you're likely reacting to the copper content; you need titanium or surgical steel posts instead.
Studs, Drops, Hoops
Studs
The daily answer. Sits flat against the lobe, nothing to catch on a scarf, a hood or a phone. Our stud collection includes crystal, floral and gemstone designs in hypoallergenic settings. Studs are also the only style that works under a winter coat.
Drops and Dangles
Movement is the point — a drop catches light as you turn your head, which a stud physically can't do. Reads more formal and photographs better. The tradeoff is weight: past roughly two inches, most people are uncomfortable by the end of an evening.
Hoops and Huggies
Most casual of the three, and the style that suits short hair best, since there's less hair for a drop to vanish into.
Weight Matters More Than Size
The most common regret in earring buying is weight, not look. A large stud can be heavier than a small drop, and heavy earrings stretch the piercing over years. If you're buying for all-day wear, choose by weight, not dimensions. Under about 5 grams per earring is comfortable indefinitely.
Choosing by Face Shape
- Round face: long drops — vertical lines lengthen.
- Long or narrow: studs or short drops — width balances length.
- Square jaw: curves. Teardrops and ovals soften an angular line.
- Heart-shaped: drops that widen at the bottom, balancing a narrow chin.
Guidelines, not rules. The better test: the right pair is the one you forget you're wearing.
Practical Notes
- Clean posts weekly. Skin oils on posts are a common cause of irritation that people mistake for allergy.
- Keep spare backs. Silicone backs grip better than butterfly ones and cost almost nothing. Lost earrings are the most common jewellery loss there is.
- Store pairs together — a single earring is unwearable.
- Price: $32 to $210, median around $48.
Matching Sets
Earrings plus a pendant in the same motif is the easiest matched set to wear, because both sit near the face. Browse silver necklaces to match, or see all silver jewelry.
